1752 Greaney grave, Claregalway Abbey
I am interested to trace the earliest origins of the Greaney name. Greaneys have lived at Lackagh near Claregalway, Co Galway for very many generations. There is a relatively well preserved limestone headstone inscribed Tom and Winny Greaney and dated 1752 inside the roofless Claregalway Abbey, Co Galway. Does anybody know the earliest history and origins of the O'Grainne or Greaney name (it is always assumed that it derives from Grainne Mhaol), when or how it became anglicised and what is the origin of the various versions of the coat of arms that are sometimes associated with the name?
Yours in Greaneydom,
Michael
