Hello I am descended from a family in Sale called Marsland. But I do come across the name Gratrix a lot in local history. Also some Marslands and Gratrix married each other. The Gratrix family were one of the big farming families in Sale, Cheshire. There is a "Gratrix Lane" in Sale which was named after them because the road led to the main family farm. This was run by an Edward Gratrix. He used to sell beer too, and it became known as the Lindow Tavern (recently knocked down). However as your relative moved there in 1860's I'm not sure how related they will be. The family in Sale dates back into 1700's at least. Perhaps he was a distant relative and knew of the farming opportunities in Sale.
Let me know if this is a likely link and I can forward some more info.
