Dear Linda,
I think you may be on to something with your Susanna. Here is what I know about the Mary M. Greeno family. She was my Great Great Grandmother. She was the second wife of Alexander Greeno, later Greenough.Alexander was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin. We know nothing about his parents, but they might be Grignon, pronounced Greeno, because in about 1810 there were several families of Grignons in Green Bay,some married to Indians. We do know he was French.
Old Alex, as we call him, was first recorded in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois, where he married Mary Frame and had two daughters. We think Mary died, because he moved with the Frame family to Wisconsin where he married Mary Magdeline Wildermuth and had a son, William.Where he was in 1850 we don't know.He was a kind of mystery man.He keeps disappearing. In 1858, the family was in St. Louis, Missouri where they had a son, Alexander Edward, my grandfather. In 1860, the family was back in Wisconsin where a daughter, Elizabeth was born. However, in the 1860 census the rest of the family is recorded without Old Alex.
So, we have Greneau, which sounds French;Susanna G., we don't know what happened to her or Nancy; and Green Bay, Wisconsin where Old Alex was born, was French, and may have been part Indian; and St. Louis where we know the family was long enough for young Alex to be born.
I hope I have not confused you totally. You may email me if you like and I can send more information if you think there could be a connection.
Alice Greenough Fitzgerald
