Jared E. Groce was one of the arly arrivals in Brazoria County. He came to Texas in 1821. He was born in Virginia, moved to Georgia, then to Alabama and than to Texas. He is said to be the richest man to come to Texas at that time. He arrived with a 50 wagon caravan. He did not stay long in Brazoria County because he did not like the Gulf Coast weather. He moved to Waller County and started a Plantation. In 1824 he received five leagues here in Brazoria County. In 1827 his only daughter Sarah Ann, married William H. Wharton. Jared gave the Brazoria County land to them as a Wedding present. They created the Eagle Island Plantation, which is now Clute, Texas. William and Sarah are buried here in Clute, Texas. Jared Ellison Groce built two more Plantation here in Texas. only one of his Plantation homes is still standing and that is Leornard Groce place in Waller County.
