The research I have done on JARRED ELLISON GROCE is quite contradictory to much of the information in common circulation.Although JARRED ELLISON GROCE is not in my direct line, his ancestry is quite important in refining the ancestry of my line. Thus, my information on JARRED needs to be placed before other genealogists interested in this family line for the purpose of comming to the most reliable ancestry for JARRED.
The book "First Families Of America" contains a section of JARRED ELLISON GROCE (and his line) which apparently was written by SARAH WARTON GROSS BERLET.The text reads:
JARRED ELLISON (GROSS) GROCE (B.CA 1740), FROM ENG. TO N. C. ANTE 1764; PATRIOT AM. REV.: MOVED TO HALIFAX CO., VA., ANTE 1774; TO LINCOLN CO., GA., 1787, WHERE HE WAS A DEL. TO THE CONV. WHICH FRAMED THE CONSTITUTION OF GA.;M SARAH SHEPPARD.
In the State Archives in Atlanta, Ga., I found the following page in the family name folder "GROSS-GROCE."It was apparently a page from a letter (or some other document) and was signed SARAH WHARTON GROCE BERLET (Mrs. George Berlet, 2017 Fannin St., Houston, Texas) but there was no date. Pertinent sections of this paper read:
JARED ELLISON GROCE IN THE COMPANY WITH ONE OR MORE BROTHERS, EMIGRATED TO AMERICA FROM ENGLAND PRIOR TO 1760 (AS SHOWN BY DEEDS, ETC) AND SETTLED IN NORTH CAROLINA (SURRY CO. I THINK).HE MARRIED SARAH SHEPPARD...
THE RECORDS FURTHER STATES, "JARED ELLISON GROCE, WAS A FERVANT PATRIOT, AND FOUGHT AGAINST HIS MOTHER COUNTRY, THEREBY ESTRANGING HIMSELF, FROM HIS FAMILY, WHO WERE LOYALISTS.HE CHANGED THE SPELLING OF HIS NAME FROM GROSS, TO GROCE, SAYING HE WOULD HAVE NOTHING MORE TO DO WITH ENGLAND OR HIS PEOPLE. i HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND HIS REV. WAR RECORD, SO FAR.
THE U.S. CENSUS FOR HALIFAX CO., VA. 1782---RECORDS, BESIDES JARED, ONE JOHN GROCE.HE MUST HAVE BEE(N) A SON OF JARED, FOR THE CENSUS WAS TAKEN SHORTLY AFTER JARED CHANGED THE SPELLING OF HIS NAME.
I too have been unable (after years of searching with onsite visits to the National Archives in Washington, the State archives in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carilina, and Georgia, and the Mormon Family History Library in Salt Lake City) to find ANY record that indicates JARRED had any role in the Revolution, either as a Patriot or as a Loyalist. On the other hand, it is well documented that a SOLOMON GROSS (to be shown as JARRED's brother) was a fire-brand Patriot who was jailed in N.C. for his patriotic zeal, and was nearly linched by a band of Loyalists before being rescued by Patriot sympathesizers.
Then somewhere along the information route, LOU GROSS (originally from NJ then FL, noe deceased) added the following information (in his book on GROSS lines--microfilm in New York City Library):
B17-90, JARRETT (JARUD) ELLISON GROSS, SR., SON OF B-16-90.DAVID GROSS AND MARY ELLISON, WAS BORN IN 1740 NEAR NEW CASTLE, ENGLAND.HE WAS MARRIED AT SURRY COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA IN 1767 TO SARAH SHEPPARD, DAUGHTER OF COL. JACOB SHEPPARD OF SURRY COUNTY, AND THEY HAD A FAMILY OF ELEVEN CHILDREN; 7 GIRLS AND 4 SONS. (MR. ARTHUR GROSS IN HIS LETTER ATTACHED ADDED TWO BOYS). LUCY, DEBORAH, HANNAH, SARAH, JERUSHA, SUSANNAH, MARY, SHEPPARD, JARRETT, ELLISON, EDMUND, AND LARKIN.
JARRETT ELLISON GROSS, SR., IMMIGRATED TO AMERICA ABOUT 1760 AND LANDED AT PHILADELPHIA,PENNSYLVANIA.HE JOINED THE OVERLAND WAGON CARAVAN TO NORTH CAROLINA AND SETTLED IN SURRY COUNTY, WHERE HE WAS MARRIED IN 1767.ON JANUARY 25, 1774, HE PURCHASED FROM WILLIAM PAYNE 202 ACRES OF LAND IN HALIFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA.IN THE 1785 VIRGINIA STATE CENSIS, HE IS LISTED AS JARRETT GROCE, RESIDING IN HALIFAX CO.
Then LOU GROSS writes of JARRED ELLISON GROSS, JR:
JARRED ELLISON GROSS, JR., (SON OF jarrett ellison groce sr.)WASBROUGHT TO LINCONL COUNTY, GEORGIA BY HIS PARENTS IN 1787 AT AGE FIVE.IN POLITICAL MATTERS, HE VIOLENTLY DISAGREED WITH HIS BROTHER LEONARD, AND DECIDED TO CHANGE HIS SURNAME FROM GROSS TO GROCE.aFTER HIS SECOND MARRIAGE, HE MOVED HIS FAMILY TO ALABAMA IN THE VICINITY OF MOBILE.IN 1818, HIS WIFE FLED FROM THE INDIANS TO jACJKSON, WHERE HIS SON WALLER WAS BORN.WHEN WALLER WAS SIX YEARS OLD, SHE RETURNED TO FORT GROCE, LOCATED ON THE ALABAMA RIVER AND DIED ON MARCH 10, 1818
IN THE FALL OF 1821, WHILE IN NEW ORLEANS ON BUSINESS, JARRED ELLISON GROCE, READ OF COL. STEPHEN FULLER AUSTIN'S PLAN TO COLONIZE TEXAS AND DECIDED TO MOVE TO THIS LAND OF PROMISE AND SETTLED IN WALLER COUNTY ON THE BRAZOS RIVER.
So now we have JARED (the second) rather than JARRET (the first) changing his name because of a dispute with his brother LEONEARD (of which there is no record) ans also changing his name some 15-20 years after the Revolution.
My research also does not indicated that JARED came to America circa 1740 with several brothers. The book "Genealogy of Sylvanus Fowler Of Newbergh, New York, Jackson And Clay County, Tenn. And Related Families" by Elsie Donaldson Waters (Mrs. W. D. Waters), 1900 Acklen, Apt 1409, Nashville, TN has one page entitled "The Genealogy of Edmond Gross Of English Descent."The page lists the following family:
EDMOND GROSS, VIRGINIA FARMER, SARAH CHILDRESS--12 CHILDREN: SOLOMON GROSS, SOUTH CAROLINS LEGISLATOR, MARY USSERY; GARATT GROSS, GEORGIA FARMER, SARAH SHEPARD--7 CHILDREN; JOHN GROSS, GEORGIA FARMER, RODA USSERY--5 CHILDREN; RICHARD GROSS, VIRGINIA FARMER, WIFE UNKNOWN; JOSHUA GROSS, NORTH CAROLINA FARMER, STORY HUNT--3 CHILDREN FIRST WIFE--SECOND WIFE UNKNOWN; EDMOND GROSS, VIRGINIA FARMER, WIFE UNKNOWN; NANCY GROSS, GEORGE SMALLWOOD, VIRGINIA FARMER; ELIZABETH GROSS, GEORGE SUMPTER, VIRGINIA FARMER; SUSAN GROSS, ABRAM STOW; SARAH GROSS, BEN VON, NORTH CAROLINA FARMER; FRANCIS GROSS, JOHN DAY, KENTUCKY FARMER; LUCY GROSS, WELCOME USSERY, 12 CHILDREN.
ARTHUR GROSS, of Palm Harbor, FL (a descendant of SOLOMON GROSS) conducted a great deal of research on this line and amomg his papers is a letter written in 1936 from C. W. GROSS, an attorney in Tuscaloosa, Al, to BETTY GROSS, 323 Ridgley Apartments, Birmingham, AL.A pertinent section of the letter states:
SOLOMON GROSS AND SARA LEVERETT HAD FIVE SONS: ELLISON GROSS, JOHN GROSS BLUFORD GROSS, WILLIAM HARILSON GROSS, AND DUDLEY GROSS.
This SOLOMON GROSS was the son of the old SOLOMON and the son named ELLISON GROSS was lilkely named after his great uncle who would have been JARRED ELLISIN GROSS.
In the late 1760's and early 1770's, SOLOMON GROSS, JARRETT GROCE, JOHN GROSS, and JOSHUA GROSS were living in the same local area along Little River in Old Anson Co., NC.
Land records further tie JARRED ELLISON GROSS to SOLOMON GROSS and his line.In Anson Co. in 1768, SOLOMON GROSS purchased one hundred acres from JAMES SHEPPARD.JAMES SHEPPARD was the father of SARAH SHEPPARD who married JARRETT ELLISON GROCE in 1767.In 1767, JARRETT ELLISON GROCE purchased land on Mountain Creek and the deed was witnessed by SOLOMON GROSS.
In 1773, JARRETT ELLISON GROCE sold his property on Mountain Creek to Nancy Sheppard. The deed was witnessed by SOLOMON GROSS.
Thus, it seems likely that EDMOND GROSS and Sarah Childress were the parents of JARRETT ELLISON GROSS.This EDMOND GROSS was in America long before 1740, in fact was born in Americas, probably in New Kent Co., VA.Circumstantial evidance indicates that this EDMOND (EDMUND) GROSS left Charles City Co., VA and came into Prince Edward Co., VA. about 1735, and settled on Grosses Creek in what is now the town of Farmville. He appears on a number of records for the area. He was living in the same vicinity as a THOMAS ELLISON, who was probably the great grandson of GERRARD ROBERT ELLISON of New Kent Co., VA.
Circumstantial evidence indicates that EDMOND GROSS was the son of SOLOMON GROSS, who was the son of EDWARD GROSS, who was the son of EDMOND GROSS, who immigrated into New Kent Co., VA in 1658.All of these individuals were living in close proximity to the ELLISON clan, and all were associated with the St. Peter's Parish Church. It is this writer's guess that either EDWARD or EDMOND married an ELLISON woman, and thence the propagation of the ELLISON name down through GROSS generations. There is far too much circumstantial support of the foregoing to include in this post.
Thus,I submit that JARRET ELLISON GROSS did not immigrate to America in 1740, was not the son of DAVID GROSS, and did not split with his family because he was a Patriot while his family were Loyalists.Since this is not my line, I have no vested interest in JARRETT but if my information is incorrect, which could change my direct lineage, I would appreciate having the information.
