Using Family Search for Grogan Records
Hi fellow Grogan researchers,
At our local genealogy society meeting last Saturday, our guest lecturer gave a presentation on fully utilizing the new LDS Family Search system. I want to share a bit of that information with all of you.
The new web site is at
https//www.familysearch.org.
The old web site was at
http//www.familysearch.org.
The difference is the added “s” in https
The importance of using the new web site is in the collection of actual scanned images. In about 24 hours, I was able to print out 21 birth, death and marriage certificates for persons on my family tree. That translates into roughly $210 that I saved, because I did not need to actually send away for those documents.
In order to view, print and save these documents, you must first register for the web site.
When you do register and log in, go to the “Historical Records” Tab, and click on the “Advanced Search” feature.
You can also go to the “Historical Collections” page, and just do searches for individuals in specific locations, like “Illinois Death Records.” This was by far the most useful for me.
Our lecturer explained that this is only the beginning for Family Search. Only a fraction of the images held by the LDS have been scanned and loaded onto this new web site, but they intend to continue for decades to come, so keep checking back to see what has been loaded onto the site.
Have fun!
