If this listing is referring to the jacob grotts that came down the ohio river with the james piggott party in 1779, this family lived for a short time near mayfield kentucky until the settlers gave this territory back to the indians after a siege at nearby fort jefferson. this party of 17families came northward to kaskaskia where they lived for a short time but they wereunable to acquire property for farming until they petitioned the french government in cahokia and were given the right to settle at the mouth of a creek called the great run. this area is now near the town of columbia, illinois. The site where the fort sat is now covered by the columbia airport . Catherine grotts married john gregg at this site ,now called piggotts fort and moved with her brother williams family and her mothers family to madison county about 1803. Catherine and john had several children born in madison county and did not move to texas for several years. John gregg served in the us mounted rangers during the war of 1812 in illinois. more later upon request.
