I have a John Guilham marrying in Tiverton, Devon in 1711.
Whilst I haven't found a Richard of the same era/area it occurs to me that both our families owe their names to
'carpet-bagger' priests of the Restoration period (about 1660) who went overboard on Latinizing the more familiar Williams surname (in reaction to the Puritans who would have removed Latin wherever possible).
My forebears retaliated by converting it within a generation to Gilham/Gillham.
Interestingly an 'l' followed by an 'i' could look like an 'h' .......
