1.John GUMMERE -i was born about 1784.He was a Teacher; opened Quaker School in 1814 in Burlington, NJ.He was educated Princeton University in 1825 in New Jersey.From: Burlington, A Provincial Capital by George DeCou:........degree of Master of Arts; a distinguished mathematician and at one time the University of Pennsylvania offered him the Chair of Mathematics, which, however, he declined.His 'Treatise on Surveying' ran through fourteen editions and his 'Treatise on Theoretical and Practical Astonoomy' several editions...........He was a First Head in 1833 in Haverford College.From Philadelphia Quakers 1681-1981 by Robert H. Wilson: 'One of the most celebrated (Quaker Schools) was that opened in 1814 by John Gummere at Burlington, NJ. His reputation brought students even from foreign nations. He was the progenitor of a long line of Quaker educators still making academic history. He served as first head of Haverford College when it opened in 1833, closing his own school to do so. His son, Samuel Gummere, a faculty member at Haverford, served as President there for eleven years. One grandson, Henry V. Gummere, was acting President of Haverford on two occasions during his long tenure as Director of the Strawbridge Observatory there while another, grandson, Francis B. Gummere, was a distinguished Haverford professor of English for 31 years. Great-great grandson John Flagg Gummere attended Haverford as an undergraduate, but taught at Penn Charter School and became Headmaster there serving from 1941-1968. Now Headmaster Emeritus, he has been a leader in many Friends educational organizations as well as Board Chairman of the National Association of Independent Schools.'
