It may help those who are researching to know that there are different "branches" of the Gupton family. The "Kentucky" branch descended from (1)Stephen Gupton, son of the immigrant William. He married Elizabeth that may have been a Harford or Heartford in Richmond Co. VA. His son (2)Stephen who m. Magdalene Garland - b. and died in Richmond Co. VA. His son (3) William Garland Gupton (b. 1745)m. Caty Ann Bryant, died in Richmond Co. VA His son (4) Stephen m. Phebe Baxter. This Stephen sold the land left to him by his father in Richmond Co., went first to Culpeper Co. VA and then to Green Co. KY. Many of his descendants still live in the Green Co. - Taylor Co. area in central Ky. One son, Phenton/Fenton went to Christian and Ballard Co. in western KY and has descendant there and in neighboring Missouri. Two other sons went to Jefferson Co. MS, Garland, who has descendants in that area and William Miscal, who as far as we can find never married. North Carolina Branch #1: The immigrant, William had a second son (5)William who married Mary Elizabeth Dolan. This family moved first to Orange Co. VA and two of their sons (6)Stephen and (7) James went to Franklin Co. NC. Two sons of(7)Jameswent west into Montgomery Co. TN, Thomas Gupton and Abner Gupton. I think most of the Virginia Guptons are a part of this family. NC Branch #2. Two sons of (2) Stephen and Magdalene Garland Gupton went to Chatham Co. NC,(8)Stephen a Revolutionary soldier who m. Nancy... and (9)Vincent - I have no marriage information on Vincent and don't know if he had any descendant. There was a John Gupton, who came early to Maryland and probably most of the "northern" Guptons may be his descendants. There seems to be a concentration of Guptons in Tennessee, one bunch in Cheatham?? Co. - I really don't know who they belong to. The Mongomery Co. bunch -desc. of Abner Gupton. and Guptons in Davidson-Nashville area. Those associated with the Gupton-Jones School of Embalming are descendants of Alexander Gupton - son of (4) Stephen and Phebe Baxter Gupton, part of the "Kentucky branch". There are some Gupton's in Logan Co. KY, but these are from one of the NC >TN branches. This may be totally confusing, but then again it may help sort out the "Stephens" and help those who get sidetracked on unrelated branches. Sometimes it is helpful to know who isn't your ancestor as well as who is. Happy hunting!
