Hi Matt,
Thanks for your prompt reply.
I have, on record, several families of Gutt(e)ridges in the East london area. My own family lived at Poplar until 1875. My gt grandfather, George, was the mayor of Poplar at one time. His father, also George, had a twin brother William b.1799 and another brother, James b.1785. Although I have comprehensive details of George's descendants I have nothing on James or William.
Could this be your James? James would have been 52 when Richard was born which may explain why he died while Richard was young.
If you have details of Richard's father, James, and his mother Ann Illingworth does this mean you have a birth certificate for Richard Charles? BDM had just started in 1837. If not where did you get their details from?
Spelling of names at the time of Richard's deoparture from England was not very important, so to trace Richard's ancestry we have to have an open mind on the spelling.
London, and in partiicular, the Isle of Dogs was the major port in the world at that time so there was a large floating population. Doesn't make our job any easier.
I have six sons to Richard Charles and seven daughters. Obviously you are descended from one of these six sons. Which one?
I will be happy to help in any way I can.
It may be easeier to correspond by emaai.
RegardsBarry
