I am look for the parents and siblings of my great-grandmother Bertha (Gutzmer) Ottow. I am just beginning my research and have just a few clues to go on.Here's what I've been able to find out so far.
Bertha was born in 17 October 1865 in Germany. She married Carl (aka Charles) Otto/Ottow about 1887/1888 probably in Chicago.
Their known children were: (1) Max Albert Carl Ottow, born 2 Aug 1888 in Chicago, who married Anna Maud Hapner (2) Minnie Ottow, born 11 August 1889 in Chicago, who married Joseph Henry Hapner (3) Bertha M Ottow, born March 1891 in IL, who married Pleasant Seaman Stanton (4) Ella Clara Ottow, born 11 March 1894, who married my grandfather Owen Edward Riddle.
Family members say that the Ottows moved from Chicago after all the children were born and lived in Whiting, Lake Co, Indiana for sometime until they removed to Starke Co, IN about 1898.
I find Charles, Bertha and their children living in Washington Twp, Starke Co, IN in June of 1900.
The 1900 census record shows that Bertha was born in October 1865 in Germany, had been married for 12 years. Both of her parents were born in Germany. She immigrated to the United States in 1883, had been living in the USA for 15 years.I assume she was a naturalized citizen because her husband indicated he had been naturalized. The laws of the time allowed the family members to become citizens at the time the husband was naturalized.
Carl died 17 April 1907 and Bertha died 7 April 1926.Both are buried in Forest Park, IL in Concordia Cemetery with a son named Carl A Ottow, born 26 Oct 1892 and died 2 July 1895 who died about age 3.
I have found Bertha's maiden named spelled:Gutzmer, Gertzmer, even Gotsmier. The concensus seems to be Gutzmer.
Any information or clues would be greatly appreciated.I am happy to share information. Please email me at email@example.com.
