We are trying to find info on my husbands Haddad line and have not been able to.The following info is what we have.If anyone can help us out please let us know. General (first name unknown) Beshara Haddad (husbands great-great grandfather) born about 1850 in Syria and died 1925 in Damascus, Syria was an army general, although it is not known in which army.Married Eva David who we think was born in Syria and died before 1925 probably in Damascus, Syria.Anecdotal history holds that she was either French or of French extraction. It is believed that they had three children.Joseph Beshara Haddad (husbands great grandfather)and his brother (name unknown) both left Syria about 1895.Joseph, who was only 15, immigrated to Canada by way of New England where he stayed with relatives (Uncle Solomon Haddad?).The brother went to Brazil.Arriving in Canada, Joseph associated with other Syrians who had settled, particularly, in West Vancouver. With the death of his father in (probably) 1925, the only remaining tie with Syria was a married sister, name unknown.
A cousin of Joseph – Mrs Nazerra (Julia? Haddad) Narsiff, Roxbury MA – lived (1940) and may still be living in New England.Another cousin, Elias Haddad, married Isabelle Nahome in Vancouver, BC in 1909 and had four or more children (Isabelle’s sister Freda married into Vancouver’s well-known merchant family Saba).Elias is believed to have had two sisters:Amelia Haddad who married William Stuart, a plasterer, in Vancouver in 1905; and Julia Haddad who married Jay Lindsay in New Westminister in 1905 and subsequently moved to California. An Austin Haddad (family relationship unknown) married Mary Saba in Vancouver in 1912.
Another branch of the same family settled in the Fernie-Cranbrook area of BC, and one (possibly named Abraham) is believed to have been mayor of Cranbrook.Early marriages in the Kootenays are recorded as follows:Assaph Haddad married Mary Kfouri in Fernie in 1906; Abdelour Haddad married Sophie Aheed Ead in Fernie in 1915; Assaf Haddad married Juleetie Cattinie in Fernie in 1910; John F Haddad married Johan Rahmi in Fernie in 1909; and Edward Haddad married Emmeline Kefoury in Fernie in 1914.
Descendants of Joseph’s brother and an uncle (Elias Bechara) are thought to live in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The names Beshara, Bechara and Bashara are undoubtedly one and the same.
Joseph Beshara Haddad married Sarah Naomi Fulton in Steveston, BC in 1907.After living in the BC towns of Upper Nicola, Mission, Clinton, and Ashcroft, Joseph and Sarah settled in Merritt in 1923 where he was at one and the same time a jeweller, optometrist, trader in furs, and sponsor of local baseball team.He and Naomi had 5 children and by 1999 there were more then 100 descendants.
