Artie, just this weekend I began working on Alexander and Jane Haddow of Osage Co., Kansas. It appears they were in Jefferson Twp., Allegheny Co., PA in 1870 with daughter Jane "Jennett."They immigrated in 1868 so I checked the 1861 Scotland Census and came up with only one candidate for this Alexander Haddow...remember, he was a coal miner in Pa and KS.
In 1861 in Wishaw, Cambusnethan Civil Parish, Lanarkshire, there is a family of William and Mary Haddow in which Alexander, age 22, features. He is a coal miner as are all his brothers, including 7-year old Daniel. His father is a green grocer.I am pretty much convinced this is the right one.
There is a marriage record of Cambusnethan of Alexander Haddow and Jane Irvine married 31 December 1868 (which is cutting it too close for comfort, but the circumstances are too coincidental to ignore.Perhaps there is a mistake in the transcription of the year, changing a 5 to an eight.I'd like to see the original document).
The Mormon IGI has this Alexander Haddow identified with one who died in 1896 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, but I have my strong suspicions about their conclusions on this family, due to inconsistancies and vagueness of dates and places. It also give the parents the names of William McPherson Haddow and Mary West.Again, to be treated with caution. It may be that Alexander returned to Scotland, but I strongly doubt it.Do you have any record of Alexander and Jane dying and being buried in Osage Co.?
P.S. I am not related to this family but am working for a good friend who is.
