Does anyone know of a Mr. Hague who built railroads in Turkey in the early 1800s and had a son W. Hague?
My grandfather, Henry Hague Vaughan, was born Dec 28, 1868 in Forest Hill, Kent. I, Hague Hingston Vaughan of Hamilton, Ontario am his namesake but we have never been at all clear how the name came into the family.
We do have a magnificent portrait of a heavily mustached gentleman in a fez with a ceremonial cane and a large medal and have always been told that it was done after he was given the medal for his work on building the railroads in Turkey. My father was always told it was “the original Mr. Hague”.
We also have an old colored photograph of him similarly dressed with a note on the back that it is “W. Hague’s father”in my grandmother’s writing. We have limited information on my grandfather’s family tree but there is no Hague anywhere so W. Hague might have been a family friend or a more distant relation.Does anyone know of this gentleman or his father?
