I’ve been trying for ages to sort out my Haig connection. I go back to John Haig born abt 1793 who married Elizabeth Sommerville and had 12 children. John was in the army and travelled around Ireland and Scotland eventually settling in Edinburgh, where Elizabeth’s family originated, and where we think some of John’s ancestors may have been.On his death certificate he lists his parents as being Joseph Haig(h) and Susan Priestley and we know that he was ‘not born in Scotland’. There was a John Haig of the 1st Foot (Royal Scots) who signed up in Halifax and may be our man. We think it is odd he joined a Scottish regiment rather than the local Yorkshire one but that may explain a Scottish connection.
I know that Joseph Haigh (with the Yorkshire H)of Stainland married a Susey Priestley on 27/10/1790 in Elland. Joseph was a clothier and a widower. We also have some potential deaths of Joseph and burials in Stainland (see below).
I briefly visited Elland and Stainland about a month ago but don’t have much time to go up and research locally. I would love to try and finds out if this Joseph and Susey/Susan/Susannah could be connected to my John and also more history on Joseph (previous marriages/children?) and Susey to help me. I’d like to know about the Haigh families who were in the Stainland/Elland area in the 18th century. Do you know of any information that might help me? I’d be really, really grateful!
Info from records I have: Joseph and his wife Susey were married in the parish church of Elland on 27th October 1790by T. Watson assistant curate and witnessed by William Clegg and Richard Wormald. Joseph was a widower at the time of this marriage. His occupation was a clothier. Susey signed her marriage certificate with an 'X' so was illiterate. (Marriage record from parish register of Elland page 264 entry number 1053).
There are also records of a number of Joseph Haighs being buried in Stainland cemetery. They include:
1. Shot himself accidently. No age given. Buried 21/10/1807.
2. #714 Died 3/10/1815, buried 6/10/1815 aged 75 so born approx 1740. Would have been 53 at John's birth.
3. #821 buried 6/6/1819 aged 65 so born approx 1754. Would have been 39 at John's birth.
There is a record of a Susey Priestley being buried in Stainland church on 23/9/1811.
