Your posting on your ancestor sparked some interest in me as my great great grandfather, Henry Francis Hayles was said to be from Sumter, South Carolina.
I am positive that the information passed down though the family is true as to his origin. However, it has been rather difficult to track down his ancestors. The first record I have of him is marrying my great great grandmother, Lucretia Marris in Lauderdale Co., Alabama on August 24, 1834.He is listed as Henry Hayler, then the next record I find on him is receiving a land patent for 160 acres on 5/20/1847 in Yalobusha Co., Mississippi and then immediately afterwards found in the 1850 Yalobusha Co., Mississippi Census.
He apparently moved from Alabama to Mississippi between 1843 and 1846 from information provided on the census.
My problem has been able to sort out the different spellings on the family.Hales, Haile, Hailes, Hayles, Hayler, etc.
I believe him to be an illegitamate son of one of Benjamin Haile daughters or at least connected to that family in some fashion. He isn't mentioned in Benjamin Haile's Will.
