I'm trying to get my HAKEs sorted out. I have a Bernice HAKE born January 14, 1898 in Wisconsin. Her parents are George HAKE, born February 1852 in Wisconsin, and Margaret CHRISTIAN, born February 1858 in Wisconsin. According to Wisconsin Marriages, pre-1907 they were married September 05, 1875 in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. In the marriage records he is listed as George W. HAKE. Wisconsin Marriages, pre-1907, is also where I got Margaret's maiden name, CHRISTIAN. According to the 1900 U.S. Census (Jefferson County, Wisconsin) the following children were all born in Wisconsin and are living with them:
Nora HAKE, daughter, born September 1880 Orra HAKE, son, born January 1883 Amanda HAKE, daughter, born November 1887 Clarence HAKE, son, born May 1889 Ethel HAKE, daughter, born April 1895 Bernice HAKE, daughter, born January 14, 1898
The census gives George's age as 48 and his father as being born in Ohio and his mother in Germany. The census gives Margaret's age as 42 and her father and mother as being born in Germany.
Now going to the 1880 U.S. Census (Jefferson County, Wisconsin) I think I've found George and Margaret, but I need a second opinion. I know there can be small and large discrepancies in the census information so I want to be careful not to just assume these are the same people.
George W. HAKE is 28. The "W" wasn't present in the 1900 census but it was in the marriage record. His father is listed as being born in Pennsylvania and his mother New York. His wife is Maggie, age 22. Her father is listed as being born in Prussia and her mother in Bavaria. Two children born in Wisconsin are living with them:
Lafiat (Lafayette) HAKE, son, 3 years old Ella N. HAKE, daughter, 9/12 old, after that is written Aug. It could be the "N" is for Nora (as in Ella Nora), and perhaps the enumerator calculated Aug. instead of Sept. Lafiat would be old enough in the 1900 census to have left home.
Following George HAKE back to the 1860 U.S. Census (he's 8 years old) I believe he's a son of Daniel HAKE and Caroline (Wisconsin Marriages, pre-1907 say HOBLER, but I saw HOBBE somewhere else on this board), but again I can't assume that.
Is anyone familiar enough with these people to know whether or not I have two different George HAKEs or the same one?
