MOUNT CARMEL — Anna Halkowicz, 98, formerly of 3 Arizona Drive, Kulpmont, who was a guest at Mount Carmel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center the past three years, died Friday, August 25 2006, at the nursing center.
She was born in Atlas on February 20, 1908, and was a daughter of the late Michael N. Halkowicz, who was the first U.S. postmaster in Atlas, and the late Lucia (Shiposh) Halkowicz.
After graduating from Mount Carmel Township High School in 1926, she attended the Overlook Nursing School in Summit, N.J.
Halkowicz served as a live-in governess with a doctor’s family in New York City in the late 1930s. After World War II, she was employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education in Harrisburg for 15 years as a statistical analyst before her retirement in 1973.
She was a member of St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Church, Mount Carmel. She was an accomplished pianist and played at a number of concerts at the Victoria Theatre in Mount Carmel as a young lady.
She was the last survivor of a family of 9 brothers and sisters. She is survived by two nephews, Serge Kulmatycki of Michigan and Michael Halkowicz of Lewsiburg; and a neice, Nancy Halkowicz of Connecticut.
