There was a Sarah Ann HALKYARD b. Aug 1838 in Oldham, Lancashire, England, according to the IGI.What's weird is that Aug. 1838 was the DOB for my greatgreatgrandmother, Mary Ann HALKYARD who married James PURDY.Mary had a sister, Sarah, who married a man by the surname ISAACS. According to the IGI, there was a Sarah HALKYARD chr. in Aug 1838 in Oldham, Lancashire, England.Parents were James and Margaret. However, according to the GRO, there was a Mary Ann HALKYARD and Sarah HALKYARD BOTH born in Ashton, Ref. XX, 153 and 143 respectively. However, family stories always said Mary was born in Lancashire, Oldham specifically. In addition, there was a family in the 1851 Census of Oldham that had a Mary being born in 1836 and a Sarah being born in 1838.The parents were John and Annie, both also born in Oldham. This seems very likely the family I'm interested in despite the 2 year date difference.Could Mary have erroneously given her age and birth year as 1838 when it really was 1836??? In the 1880 Nevada County Census, Mary lists herself as being 44 years of age = making her born in 1836.THEN, in the 1900 Nevada County Census, Mary lists herself as being 61 years of age = making her born in 1839. I don't know what to make of this contradictions. In addition, the biggest contradiction is that there are 2 James PURDY families in Grass Valley in the 1880's.One is headed by miner James 57, the other by farmer James 49.Miner James has a wife, Malinda 40, and farmer James has a wife Mary 44.Both families have daughters named Margaret and Mary, born in PA and CA respectively, with 1 year of difference between them.TOO WEIRD!The only definite thing the census confirms is that Malinda PURDY m. William Henry BENFIELD in 1880 when she was 16 and he was 30. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS????????????????????
