I am a descendant of a Thomas Halton/Holton, and his wife Ann, who came to NYC ca. 1852 from Ireland. He had a brother named Michael Halton, who usually used the Halton surname, my ancestor sometimes used Halton, but more oftenly used the surname of Holton. I have a list of many of these surnames who came to NYC during the Potatoe famine, and have a great deal of information about families of these names in Ireland. I am still trying to connect my Thomas to his parents in Ireland, and I believe I am close to a connection. Let me know If I can be of any help, I would gladly share my information with hopes that it will help. Some of the cultural centers in Ireland have told me that the surname of Holton is definitely of English origin, and that Halton could be either English, or old Irish.
