The History of Gorham, Maine by Hugh D. McLellan (got my copy from Picton Press) is an excellent source of info on the Hamblen line.Hamblen coverage begins on page 530 and eventually mentions George Hamblen, father of Almery Hamblen, who was the father of Sturtevant J. Hamblen.
It notes that Almery Hamblen was b. Jan 24, 1775, married Sally Clark Oct 8, 1797.Lived in Portland, was a prominent mechanic and painter, as were his sons.He d. Jan 25, 1830 in Portland; his wife Sally, d. May 19, 1822 and both were buried in Portland.At the death of George Hamblen (Almery's father), the remains were removed to Gorham and buried on "the old farm" in a place near the orchard.
George Hamblen, father of Almery Hamblen, was the 4th child of Gershom and Hannah Hamblen, b. Feb. 3, 1749/50.He married Dec. 20, 1773 Sarah Rich, daughter of Lemuel Rich.He and his parents and siblings had arrived in Gorham, ME about 1763.George Hamblen d. Dec. 18, 1834 and Sarah Rich Hamblen d. Sep. 2, 1830.
Gershom Hamblen, father of George Hamblen, was b. July 19, 1713.He served four campaigns in the old French and Indian Wars.He was married in Barnstable Aug. 9, 1739 to Hannah Almony (maiden name was probably really Almory, which now appears as "Almery" in so many descendants).Gershom Hamblen d. in Barnstable about 1756, probably of small pox.In about 1763 Mrs. Hamblen moved with her family to Gorham, ME.She d. Apr. 14, 1797, age 77.
Ebenezer Hamblen, father of Gershom Hamblen, was b. May 12, 1683 and married May 11, 1710, his cousin Thankful Hamblen, who was b. Aug. 24, 1689.Thankful was the daughter of Israel Hamblen and half sister of Jacob Hamblen.Ebenezer Hamblen d. in 1736, at the age of 53.Thankful Hamblen d. Jan 15, 1768, age 78.
Ebenezer Hamblen was the son of John, and grandson of James and Anna, the first settlers of the name in Barnstable.James and Anna came from London about 1639.
According to my cousin Almery Richard Hamblen,John Hamblen, father of Ebenezer, was b. 1644 and d. 1718.He married Sarah Bearse, who was b. 1646 and d. before 1718.James Hamblen, father of John, was b. about 1606 and d. about 1690.He married Anna Hamblen, who was b. about 1608 and d. unknown.
I'm not in the Hamblen line.My cousin Almery Richard Hamblen and I share a great-grandmother (his) and a great-great-grandmother (mine) who were sisters.He has a lot of info on the Hamblen line.
