This is a long story that has many of us (descendants of Joseph Normand and Agathe Hamelin/Gamelin) very confused. There are so many conflicting and all unproven theories as to who both of these individuals were.
What we do know- Joseph Normand and Agathe Hamelin were the parents of 18 children. There is no known record of their marriage, though, so we do not know who their parents were. The first three of their children were born in 1765, 1766 and 1767 and all baptized on 19 Aug. 1768 at Fort St. Joseph (from "La population des forts francais d'Amerique by Marthe Faribault-Beauregard) The next four were born "dans les pays d'en haut" between 1768 and 1773 and baptized at Montreal on 5 July, 1773. (from PRDH and Tanguay) The remaining 12 children were born and baptized between 1775 and 1792 - earlier ones at Sault-au-Recollet, the latter ones at St. Vincent de Paul. (From PRDH) I also know that both Joseph Normand and Agathe Hamelin were still alive on 19 July, 1799 because they were present at St. Eustache at the baptism of their granddaughter Agathe Filion (daughter of Antoine Filion and Marie Anne Normand).
Regarding Joseph Normand - PRDH says his parents are Charles Normand and Catherine Boutin and that he was baptized 1 Feb. 1738 at Quebec. Tanguay says his parents are Pierre Normand and Marguerite Lehays and that he was born in 1738. We know this can't be, because Marguerite Lehays was long dead and Pierre had re-married in 1724 to Marie Joseph Quay. Drouin chooses Pierre Normand and Marie Josephe Quay as the parents of Joseph Normand who married Agathe Gamelin.
Regarding Agathe Hamelin/Gamelin - PRDH does not show any parents for her. Tanguay and Drouin both claim she is the daughter of Laurent Eustache Gamelin and Marie Josephe Dudevoir - Lachine, and was born in 1745. Denissen in "French Families of the Detroit River Region" says Agathe Gamelin was born 9 Oct. 1745, died 17 Oct. 1745 and married Joseph Normand at Detroit in 1768?!? I have found this baptism record, but not the death or marriage in Ste. Anne microfilms. Several children of Laurent Eustache Gamelin were married in the 1760s at Detroit, but no Agathe.
Additional information we know- In 19 of the 20 baptisms of her children and grandchildren Agathe is Agathe Hamelin, only once is she referred to as Gamelin in these church records.
A child named Agathe was baptized at Fort Michilimakinac on 9 Oct. 1746. She had been born in February. Her father is an unknown French man and her mother is Marie Charlotte, Indian, baptized the previous year. On 11 June, 1745 a 30 year old Indian woman was baptized at Fort Michilimakinac. Her baptismal name was Marie Charlotte and herlast name in the records is Hamelin. She is described as the sister of the deceased wife of Charles Hamelin, who was residing at Sault Ste Marie.
Sorry to make this so long, but I hope it clarifies the situation and question of what information we are looking for.
