Announcing the publication of
Hammack Cousins:
Hammack and Hammock Families in England and America, 1569-2010
Based upon two decades of research by Thomas Daniel Knight of Edinburg, Texas, and Felix Maben Hammack of Bend, Oregon, Hammack Cousins:Hammack and Hammock Families in England and America, 1569-2010, is now at press!Available directly from Felix M. Hammack and published by Penobscot Press in Rockland, Maine, this 860-page book covers the history of the family of William “O” Hammack of Richmond County, Virginia, tracing many lines of descent to the present day.It also examines several allied lines and includes a lengthy genealogical report tracing all known Hammack and Hammock descendants of the immigrant William to 1850 and many other lines to the present day!
The book is divided into two parts and includes four lengthy appendices. Each of these will be briefly summarized below.
Part I examines the Hammack and Hammock families in England and America and includes a study of the family of John Hammack (whose name was spelled Hammack, Hammock, Hamoke, Hammick, Hammac, and Hammat) of Ermington Parish, Devonshire, England, and includes a chapter discussing the possible evolution of the surname from earlier English sources.William Hammack’s immigration to Virginia is contextualized, and subsequent chapters examine the immigrant’s life, his offspring, and the movement of Hammack and Hammock families throughout Virginia into Tennessee, Kentucky and the Midwest as well as from Southside Virginia into Georgia, Alabama, and the “Deep South.”The first Hammacks and Hammocks to reach the west coast are discussed, including Jesse Hammack (originally from Arkansas), Martin Hammack (originally from Tennessee and Missouri), and the families of Oregon settlers James and George Hammock (originally from Tennessee and Kentucky). The family of John Robert Hammack (originally from Mississippi) carried the surname first into North Dakota and then into western Canada.
In the “Deep South,” the text discusses the many Hammack and Hammock families who moved into Georgia from Amelia and Lunenburg Counties of Virginia before focusing on the families of Robert and Millenor Jackson Hammack, their son William T. Hammack and his wife Mary Felts, and their grandson Simeon Hammack and his wife Elizabeth Jane Moore.Later chapters turn to Mississippi, examining the families of Simeon’s son John T. Hammack, his grandson William Simms Hammack, and his great-grandson George Cleveland Hammack.A concluding chapter in Part I discusses the overall development of the Hammack and Hammock families in America from William’s arrival in 1656 into the twentieth-century.
Part II examines several generations of Hammack foremothers, their ancestry, and their families’ contributions to the Hammack and Hammock saga in America. These chapters focus on the lives and ancestry of Grace [----] Hammack, Christian Middleton Hammack, Ann Lambert Hammack, Millenor Jackson Hammack, Mary Felts Hammack, Elizabeth Jane Moore Hammack, Louisa Templeton Hammack, Sallie Elizabeth Cates Hammack, and Mary Almedia Bankston Hammack.Among the particular families discussed are those of Robert Middleton of Virginia, William and Ann Claughton Lambert and Hugh and Ann Morgan Lambert of Virginia, Edward and Lucy Parrish Jackson of Virginia, John Felts of Virginia and Georgia, Robert Moore of Virginia and Ussery Moore and Martha Bishop Moore of Virginia and Georgia, David and James Templeton of Ireland, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina, Richard Cates and his family of Virginia and North Carolina, Francis Browne and his family of Virginia and North Carolina, Lawrence Bankston of Pennsylvania and North Carolina, John O’Neal of North Carolina and Georgia, John and Martha Parker Stephens of North Carolina and Georgia, Henry Stewart of North Carolina and Georgia, Charles and Patience Jones Gary of South Carolina, William and Ann Parks Stringer of South Carolina and Mississippi, and many other families.
Four useful appendix sections supplement the narrative text:
Appendix I discusses terms and concepts in the book that may be unfamiliar to the reader, including colonial marriage customs and religious life in the American colonies.
Appendix II discusses notable lineages connecting to families covered in the preceding narrative. The documented lineage of Sallie Elizabeth Cates Hammack of Mississippi to Virginia immigrant Christopher Calthorpe is presented, as well as Calthorpe’s English connections to members of the royal Plantagenet family in England, several signers of England’s 1215 Magna Carta, and Charlemagne (742 - 814), King of the Franks and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.Connections to George Washington (through the Washington ancestry of Mary Almedia Bankston Hammack), to Thomas Jefferson (through the Perkins ancestry of Sallie Elizabeth Cates Hammack), and to Abraham Lincoln (through the intermarriage of Lincoln’s maternal uncle into the Virginia Hammack family) are presented here.
Appendix III – beginning on page 463 and ending on page 719 – includes a fully indexed summary of Hammack, Hammock, and Hammac descendants of William “O” Hammack to approximately 1850.Citations are included, and when circumstantial identifications have been posited, the rationale for those is explained. The final fourth of this section focuses primarily on descendants of William T. and Mary Felts Hammack, but pages 463 to 656 include many different Hammack families descending from the three sons of the immigrant William “O” Hammack.
Appendix IV, beginning on page 714, discusses “Hammack and Hammock Mysteries,” families that, despite detailed research, it has proven difficult to place conclusively in the Hammack and Hammock lineage. Most of these families likely descend from William “O” Hammack and connect to Hammacks and Hammocks moving southward and westward into Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama during the period between 1800 and 1850.This section also discusses other Hammack, Hammock, and Hammick families – including Isaac Hammock of Connecticut, Thomas Hammock of New Jersey, Jacob Hammick of New Jersey and Ohio, and Rudolph Hammock of Virginia – who likely do not connect to the Virginia immigrant William “O” Hammack.
Based upon extensive primary source research in archives in England, Virginia, and the southeastern United States, this volume presents a history of the Hammack and Hammock families in England and America that should interest both the casual family historian as well as the detailed researcher. With more than 1800 footnotes copiously citing primary sources and a 10,000 name index, researchers will be guided to a wealth of primary source material that will assist them as they research their own families more fully.
Hammack and Hammock Families in England and America, 1569-2010 may be ordered directly from Felix Maben Hammack.Copies are available prior to publication (until April 30, 2011) at the promotional rate of $79.00 plus $10.00 for postage and handling; after April 30, 2011, the volume will be available at the full retail price of $89.00 plus $10.00 postage and handling.
