I realize this is an old thread, but maybe people are still checking it. My grgrgrgrandfather is Henry Hampe b. 30 Apr 1827 In Hanover, Germany. I believe his father to be John Christian Frederick Hampe b. 02 Oct 1799
In my family bible is the following note in reference to Henry written by his Daughter Lydia Hampe Cooper: "Father- Sept 10, 1832 on Staten Island then to Erie Pa at the age of 5 years."
Based on this information, I found the following ship record (original available on Ancestry.com and I can send a copy to anyone requesting):
List of Passengers, Brig ConstitutionCapt. Volkmann From Bremen Arriving New York Sept. 10, 1832 Friedr Hampemale 32farmer Germany Johanna Hampefemale26Germany Heinriche Hampemale 1Germany Mahlja Hampefemale.5germany
SO, It appears that JOHN CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICK HAMPE had a wife named Johanna Hampe. I have often wondered if this is Hannah Helmbrect. However, I see that Dave McCallister liststhat He married (1) Helen Sanders, born 30 Aug 1806; died 8 May 1827. Seems unlikely that my Henry (Heinriche) would be born during the time that John was married to Helen.... Perhaps it is the wrong Frederick Hampe. However, the immigration date, place and his birth year all match the info I have in my family bible and the passenger list...
One of the reasons I believe I have the CORRECT father is the following newspaper clipping that is also in my family bible: A Card of Thanks We desire to express our heartfelt thanks to all of our friends and neighbors for their kindness and sympathy and for their assistance during the sickness and death of our dear mother, Mrs. Hannah Hampe, and especially to Mr. A. Mehaffe and the members of his choir, who so kindly assisted at the funeral services, last Tuesday. And as we may never be able to do this personally, we take this method of expressing our gratitude. - J.G. Hampe Adeline Hampe
Many sources (Including Dave McCallister of above) list J.G. Hampe (Joseph Godfrey Hampe) who was married to Adeline Geher as the son of John Cristian Frederick Hampe. This newspaper clipping clearly states that Hannah Hampe is the mother of J.G. The bible belonged to Lydia Hampe Cooper, daughter of Hannah and Henry Hampe and has been passed down to me.....grgrgrgrandaughter of Hannah and Henry
