Hancox's of Tysoe - can anyone help please Posted by: Christina Gardner (ID *****4976) Date: May 26, 2005 at 06:29:13 of 169
I am contacting you with a bit of a long shot question. I am researching for an elderly friend of mine who had a half sister called Winifred Hancox (known as Winnie) who was born out of wedlock to an Ethel Caroline Hancox in 1908 or 1909. We know that Ethel's mother was Caroline Hancox who was born in 1855 in Tysoe, Ethel was also illegitimate, she was born in 1885 at Lymington in Hants and was possibly raised by her uncle William Hancox and his wife Ann in Tysoe (she was living with them in 1891 aged 6 although her place of birth in the census was given as Tysoe). It was thought that Winnie was either raised by her grandmother Caroline or another family member possibly in Tysoe or at least in Warwickshire (where she may have been born) or was sent as a young girl to Australia possibly with Dr Barnardo’s. Caroline's parents were John and Elizabeth Hancox, her siblings were: John Henry, William, George, Prudence, Clark, Emilia and Ada all born at Tysoe 1846 - 1965. We know that Emilia married a Thomas Wilkes and had a son Thomas in 1887 but she died aged 28 in 1891. Brother Clark was a baker and confectioner in Coventry and had a number of children before he died in 1903 aged 43. Does any of this ring any bells to anyone who has links to the Hancox's of Tysoe? If so I know an elderly lady who is desperate to know what happened to her sister Winnie and anything about her mother's family. Regards Christina.
