HANF in Nova Scotia, CANADA
Here in Nova Scotia, there are about 27 HANF families, about 70% of all the ones in Canada. Most HANF in NS live in Yarmouth County, at the southern tip of the province (across from New England).
I do not know their origin, but I thought they were likely descended from German soldiers or farmers who came over with the British around 1749-1759 at the time our capital city Halifax was founded. But I do not know if this is so.
Most German people in NS arrived here around the 1750 period, with more coming at the end of the American Revolution in 1783/4. Most ended up in Lunenburg County, just south of Halifax along the Atlantic Ocean, but there are no HANF names living there with the other German names, so it seems the HANF arrived at some other time - maybe from the USA.
As you may know, King George III of England was from the House of Hanover and he enlisted his many German cousins to provide soldiers and settlers - first in the American Colonies, then later in Canada after the USA was born. The other reason was that many Germans were Protestant and the English wanted to increase the population with non-Catholic, and non-French, populations. George paid the Germans £3 MILLION in the 1770's to fight for him in the Rev War. In the end, many of them deserted the army and stayed in the new land to live.
Land in Germany in the late 1700's was very scarce, and drought had caused many people to face famine, or to move, so many were glad to take up the offer to come to North America.
Does anyone posting here have a family history of ancestors coming from Canada, or perhaps moving there ?
The website in Austria (Graz) is interesting. I was in Graz in December 2000 and found it beautiful, with the snow and mountains and all. We spent most of our vacation across the border in Hungary.
