St. Charles (Kane County, Illinois) Chronicle, Dec. 15, 1927. Hanson Finds Live Tarantula Last Week In Bananas. A live young tarantula was found by Walter E. Hansen, manager of the East side A. & P. store Wednesday afternoon.
The tarantula is a pisonous spider which is occasionally brought to America from the tropics on bunches of bananas. The bit of a tarantula has proven fatal to men.
Hansen was pulling the paper off a new bunch of bananas when he saw something moving inside. Shaking the bananas, Mr. Hansen got the tarantula on the floor, after which it was an easy task to get the huge spider in a bottle.
Two eggs were also found in the bananas with the tarantula, which is said to be a young one.
The tarantula and the eggs were taken to the office of Dr. I.G. Langum, city physician, who plans to show them to the school students and at the Community Hospital at Geneva. (Posted as a courtesy. Not related.)
