Cameron,
There was also a Benjamin Hanway who appeared in Chester County, PA, after Thomas.Every appearance is they were brothers. The only Hanways I could find in the IGI (Mormon) showed a Thomas b. 1720, with a brother Benjamin b. 1730.Both seemed to fit. There father, Jonas, as mentioned.
Most Hanway descendants have heard the legend that a Jonas Hanway invented the umbrella in England, no, just the first to carry it after his travels as a trader in Persia.Several books have been written about or mentioned him... quite a philanthropist as it turns out, but never married, no children, thereby squashing another legend about descendancy.
Library of Congress lists about 75 of Jonas' writings, he was prolific on social issues.
I provide this just to further whet your appetite.
Much good hunting, and tell me more about your lineage from Rebecca Hanwy, please, scribe@winfinity.comWhile we're traveling at the moment will be home by first of May.

Best, Paul Hanway
