Hi judith-
It's great to hear from you!I hope you and yours are all doing well.
I just looked at the 1850 census for Independence, Dunklin County, Missouri on ancestry.com. I think your Amos might be my Lewis.
Dwelling/Family #39
Lewis Harper...
Elinor...
Lewis...
Martha...
Louisa...
Adam...
Dorcus...
At first glance the father's name does look like Amos because the "L" is so loopy on the top and the "e" looks almost like its underneath the "L" and kinda smushed into the 'w", but when I zoomed in on it you can see a separation of the letters more clearly. If you compare the father's "L" to his son Lewis' "L" you will see the similarity in shape.Just to clinch it, compare the "A" in his son Adam and it looks completely different with the top part of the "a" having a different arc to it.
I also looked at Elinor. The son Lewis' "L" extends into the line above making the 'n" in Elinor look like a "z", but there is a definite "o" and "r" on the end of the name, so I'm still thinking it's Elinor at this point.
What do you think?
If you don't have a way to enlarge the image on your copy of the census let me know and I'll see if I can print a blown-up version of their names and email it to you.
Have a GREAT day!!!
