John Harpst in PA - Name change?
I have found a John Harpst and Mrs. Harpst who arrived in Pennsylvania in 1786 on the ship Patsey Rutledge from Hamburg, Germany. There is a John Harpst in BERKS County, PA in 1790 with one male over the age of 16, one male under the age of 16, and three females.Using Ancestry census records, this is the only "Harpst" in Pennsylvania in this time frame. In 1800 the closest thing I could find was a John Harple in Montgomery County, page 779.He is over the age of 45 with a male child under the age of 10.Is this the same person in 1786 & 1790?I am trying to find the parents of a John "Harp" who is later found in Bucks County who would fit the age frame for the male child in the 1800 census. My John would have been abt 6 yrs old at that time.The1850, 1860 & 1870 census records all show John Harp as being born in PA abt 1794.That being the case, he has to belong to one of the 1800 PA families. This is the only place I have found for him to fit.I am wondering if the name was changed from Harpst to Harp? The family I am looking for is, with only one exception, found with the Harp spelling. In the 1900 census of Philadelphia, the name is spelled "Harpst" in the case of John Jacob Harp, grandson of John Harp born 1794.
The John Harp born abt 1794 owned property in Phila., Montgomery & Bucks counties. He lived in Bucks county from 1840 until his death in the 1870's.His wife was named Margaret ?.They had children named John, Jacob, Ann Rebecca and Mary Catherine.
Any information, or opinions on the name change theory, will be appreciated.
