My name is Lisa-Marie Harrity and I am from Govan in Glasgow, Scotland.
My father is Austin Harrity born 1950. Ring any bells? My grandfather is Patrick Harrity born 1915. My great grandfather was Austin Harrity born 1884 (died 1933) and his father was Austin Heraghty (according to our family history the man who changed the name!)
We hold a birth certificate of sorts that states "It would appear Austin Heraghty was born in Auchnagower, Co. Mayo around 1845."
Round about 1886 as Ireland suffered at the hands of the english an altercation with his english landlord led to the immediate necessary emigration of Austin Heraghty and his brothers bearing his name: Michael, Patrick, Rory (and possibly Thomas).
Some of the brothers headed for the west coast of Scotland (from where I descend) and the others headed to the Americas.
In order to avoid the authorities and to recognise their blood it is believed the brothers changed their name from Heraghty to Harrity.
This may be fanciful (after all, we are Celts).
My mum and dad run their own business in West Sussex, England. I am a graduate from University of East London and am working as an Internet journalist. My brother, Austin Paul Harrity, is a Law graduate from Oxford University. We must be from good stock!
God bless, hope this helps, or at least makes interesting reading.
