Harrop Yard Chapel & James b abt 1740 Ashton under Lyne
Now looking at Religion...non-conformist, Methodist, Wesleyan
'Our' Harrops were stong Methodists supporting and even building churches wherever they went in South Australia and Victoria.
Do you know of a James Harrop b abt 1740 Ashton under Lyne?
The following info from a book by Edward Greenand Church web site
"James Harrop, the only ‘man of means’ within the local society who almost certainly donated land at Harrop’s Yard, near Cricketer’s Lane for the chapel.
A 19th century engraving of the building shows that it resembled an early industrial building – a plain structure, two storeys in height with large windows."
A Catholic priest, ordained 1823 replaced the Harrop Yard Chapel with a new chapel at Dukinfield in 1825.
In 1822 ...Catholics in Ashton-u-Lyne were meeting regularly to celebrate Mass and the Sacraments. The "Church" was in a narrow passage off Crickets lane near the market cross known as Harrops Yard.
