I have a promissory note made by my GGGpa's brother, Samuel Ashton Curless, dated October 29, 1849, in which he promises to pay $100 to a Newton, a Harryman and a Demais for "value received". It was probably a claim for a gold mine because Sam Curless died in Jan 1850 in California, according to Family Bible. Do any of you have any men who went to CA that year? Just trying to reconstruct his journey and death. His brother kept the promissory note folded up in a diary and I was apparently the first person to realize what it was! At least in this century!
