Pomfreys of Middletown, CT
My Brazil ancestors came from Meriden, Connecticut. The most famous of these Brazils was my great uncle, Walter P. Brazil, who performed in Vaudeville productions in the early 1900s. He worked with such well-known theater figures of the day--most notably George M. Cohan and Flo Ziegfeld. He danced, sang, and acted in "The Passing Show" of 1915 and the "Cohan Revue" in 1916. My grandfather on my mother's side was Patrick Brazil (1853-1913) who married my grandmother Catherine Pomfrey (1863-1906) in 1889 in Middletown, CT.
The Braziels, who lived in Waterbury CT, were cousins of the Meriden Braziels. I often wonder how surnames get spelled differently within the same family. The Pomfrey family of Middletown, Ct is often spelled as Pomfret, Pomphret, Pumphrey, and Pomphrey.
