Herzog was the original name of the family and has been changed over the years to many different spellings. Herzog in German is pronounced phonetically Hairt-tsok. The spellings of Hertzog, Hartzog, Hartsog, Hardsog, Hartsough, Hartsook, Hartsock, Hartsoe, Hartsaw, etc. are all derivations of Herzog. The Herzogs/ Hartsocks/ Hartsooks from Orangeburg, South Carolina are probably a different family from Gary's and mine (That doesn't mean there is no relation.) Our family came into the colonies in the early 1700s and settled first in New Jersey, than Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illnois, etc. I believe the Orangeburg family remained mostly in the south, i.e., South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas, etc. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. They also came to this country, I believe, in the 1700s.
