I ordered the Pension file (27570) from the Texas State Archives. The name is listed as Zachariah Hasler (but in some of the documentation they spell it Hasley and Hassley). It is dated April 1914 and he is in Throckmorton Co, TX at that time. He states that he was discharged June 29, 1865 at Brownsville, TX. He was from Lavaca County and munstered into service at Houston, TX in 1861.
He is 73 years old and born in Arkansas. He has been in Texas since he was 12, 61 yrs. He has resided in Throckmorton the past 4 years. He is confined to bed w/broken leg.
He served 3 years 9 months and was under Capt Daly's unattached company (Cavalry) and transferred to Light Artillery under Captain Jones.
He has no property and lives with his daughter, Mrs. Darden. Witnesses are W.D. Darden and W.T. Talley.
Witnesses to his military service are W.R. "Rufe" Hudgeons and Mark Heath both of Hallettsville, Lavaca Co. Tx.
There is an update in the file, a letter dated March 15, 1923, from the County Court in Jackson, Oklahoma. The judge certifies to the pension commission that Goodman Grooms Furniture Co. of Altus, Ok furnished the casket (cost $30.00) to bury the remains of Z. Hasley of Odell, Texas on March 3 or 4th.He states he went with Mr. Hasley's son to see about the purchase of the casket.
Another letter from T.H. Hardin, M.D. of Jackson Co, OK states that he attended the last illness of Z. Hassley of Odell, TX and that he died on the 3rd day of March, 1923.
Does anyone have any information on his wife, Samantha? Does anyone know her maiden name? Or who are her parents or siblings? Does anyone know where and when they were married? Was she married before? I think I could be related to her because I am looking for a Samantha about her age born in Wisconsin and living in Lavaca County, Tx back in 1870/1880.
She must have died between 1900 and 1910 but cannot find a death certificate on her.Does anyone know where she is buried or have an obituary for her?
