MY GREAT GRANDFATHER WAS JAMES HAVILAND RICH. IT'S A CUTE STORY FOR ANYONE WHO KNOWS OF THIS HOTEL. I WOULD LOVE TO FIND OUT MORE INFO ON IT IF POSSIBLE.
James Haviland, was originally born, Haviland James. While my ggg grandmother, Sarah, was pregnant with James (Haviland), her husband, James fell very ill. The family was living in a lodging house called the Hotel Haviland in Back Bay Boston.
Deprived of a steady income, Sarah fell behind in the rent. The proprietor of the hotel, moved with compassion for the sturdy young matron struggling to support herself and her children and offered to forgive her six months rent, if she agreed to name her child when born, after his hotel. Sarah agreed and kept her word. She named her son Haviland James. He later as an adult went by James Haviland Rich. Ever since, the name Haviland has been used as a family name from generation to generation.
