My husband's family emigrated from Syria to the US at the beginning of the last century. Most ended up in Rhode Island, but some of them went to Detroit and NJ.
His great grandfather,Bashir George Gebrajaila Hayek, lived in Patterson when he registered for the WWI draft in 1917.
Bashir's sons, Chouki (Charles) Gebaile Hayek and Joseph "Sibhee" Hayek died in Patterson (1992 and 1985)
I believe there are others from this family in NJ. This is a new branch of the family for me, so I am still working things out. So many of the names that I have been given are phonetic--not to mention those that were deliberately changed. It is a challenge!
