HAYS- The HAY coat-of-arms was: Argent three escutcheon gules, to which was added the badge of office of HAY, Earl of Errol, Lord High Constable of Scotland, which was crossed arms, each hand grasping a short sword and supporting the escutcheon gules, surmounted by a crown.The name in olden times was written De La Haye and De La Haya, later Hay and Hays.
(I) WILLIAM HAY, a native of Scotland, left that country during the religious persecution, and settled in County Tyrone, Ireland.He was at the siege of Derry and endured its trials until relief came, being absent from his family twenty-two months...Children: MARTHA, married JOHN WALLACE; JAMES.
(II) JAMES HAYS, son of WILLIAM HAY, was born in county Tyrone, Ireland.He married, and had among other children, JOHN.
(III) JOHN, son of JAMES HAYS, was born in 1740.He emigrated to America in 1789, arriving in Philadelphia in September of that year.After remaining the following winter at Maytown, Lancaster Co, Pa., he purchased a farm at the head of Yellow Breeches Creek, on the Walnut Bottom Road, Cumberland Co., Pa.He resided there 10 or 12 years, but was unable to obtain a proper title to his property, and his first payment.He afterward purchased 300 acres in Path Valley, Franklin Co., Pa., where some of his descendants yet reside.He married, in 1766, ELEANOR LEACH, a native of the north of Ireland.She died in 1826.Children: 1. (IV) JOHN (2), son of JOHN (1) HAYS, was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, Oct. 14, 1771, and died June 15, 1811, at Somerset, Pa.He married, December 1797 MARTHA WALLACE, born April 23, 1773, in Allen Twp., Cumberland Co., Pa., and died Sept. 25, 1843, at Harrisburg, Pa.She was a daughter of CAPTAIN SAMUEL WALLACE, who served in the Revolutionary War.CAPTAIN SAMUEL WALLACE was a son of JOHN and MARTHA (HAYS) WALLACE, and married MARGARET PATTON.Children of JOHN and MARTHA (WALLACE) HAYS: 1. (v) JOSEPH CALDWELL, son of JOHN (2) and MARTHA (WALLACE) HAYS, was born at Somerset, Pa., July 4, 1810.He married, at Meadville, Pa., April 17, 1838, ANNA MARIA, daughter of EBENEZER and SARAH (GREGORY) BETTS; she was born Oct. 13, 1808, and died Feb. 20, 1892.EBENEZER BETTS was descended from THOMAS BETTS, one of three brothers who settled in Guilford, Connecticut, who came over in 1650.He had a son JAMES who married HANNAH BOUTON.They had two sons, BENJAMIN and ELIAS.Of these, BENJAMIN married REBECCA TAYLOR, and died about 1785.He had a son BENJAMIN, born Nov. 7, 1733, died 1822, who married, Sept. 16, 1762, ABIGAIL LOCKWOOD, and had children: EBENEZER, ELIAS, ELIPHALET, ABIGAIL and DOLLY.Of these, EBENEZER married, Dec. 6, 1796, SALLY GREGORY, of Norwalk, Connecticut, and had children: CAROLINE, born Jan. 10, 1802; ELIZABETH, born March 25, 1804; MATILDA, born Aug. 6, 1806; ANNA MARIA; FREDERICK GREGORY, born Aug. 14, 1812.SARAH GREGORY was descended from MATTHEW GREGORY, who settled in Norwalk, Connecticut.He had a son, DEACON MATTHEW GREGORY, born in 1673, and died in 1777.DEACON MATTHEW had sons EZRA, ISAIAH, and MATTHEW.EZRA GREGORY was born Feb. 21, 1726, married HANNAH BETTS, and had children: ABRAM, born Oct. 16, 1752; ELZRA, Oct. 17, 1754; MATTHEW, born Aug. 21, 1757, died June 5, 1848; HANNAH, born July 27, 1760; MOSES, Sept. 13, 1762; IRA, Aug. 12, 1765; LEVI, Sept. 7, 1767; SALLY, May 21, 1770, married EBENEZER BETTS (mentioned above); BENJAMIN, born July 27, 1774.
JOSEPH CALDWELL HAYS was a prominent figure in the social and political life of Meadville, Pa.He was an elder for many years in the First Presbyterian Church of Meadville, where he resided for upwards of 50 years...On July 27, 1886, COLONEL HAYS was presented with a goldheaded cane to commemorate the completion of half a century in journalistic life.He died Nov. 3, 1891.His children were as follows: 1. JOHN BETTS, born at Meadville, March 12, 1839; served in civil war with distinction; married May 26, 1864, FANNIE, daughter of ALEXANDER J. MEAD, and granddaughter of GENERAL DANIEL MEAD, founder of Meadville.Their children were: JOSEPH M., born April 16, 1866; FANNIE M., Aug. 13, 1868; ANNA LOUISE, born July 20, 1870, died Jan. 13, 1871; MARION M., born Feb. 20, 1876.2. SAMUEL WALLACE, born Feb. 10, 1841.3. FREDERIC WILLIAM.4. (VI) FREDERIC WILLIAM, son of JOSEPH CALDWELL and ANNA MARIA (BETTS) HAYS, was born at Meadville, Crawford Co., Pa., March 17, 1842...FREDERIC WILLIAM married, June 12, 1873, ELIZABETH IDA, daughter of GEORGE EDWARD and ELIZA (BASKIN) LASHELLS, born Nov. 26, 1850.Children: 1. BESSIE, born June 13, 1875; died March 19, 1881.2. JOHN LASHELLS, born May 24, 1878; married Dec. 21, 1906, MAUD WALKER; one son: FREDRICK WALKER, born Jan. 28, 1908.
