Dear Merlyn:
We have the Hearne's traced back to William HEARNE, Capt. [b 02 December 1630 London, d October 1691 St. Kitts Plantation, bur. Hearne Cem., Delmar, Somerset Co. MD] and wife Mary CUTHBERT [b 15 January 1648/49 Witnesham, Suffolk ENG, d Aft. 1691 Delmar, Somerset MD, bur. Hearne Cem.]
William Hearne, born in 1630, became a wealthy London merchant; he served as a Captain under Oliver Cromwell. In 1653 Cromwell had become Lord Protector of England; he dissolved Parliment in 1658 and, being a Puritan Protestant, prohibited Anglican services, but died that year. The monarchy was restored; Charles II was crowned in 1661.After the restoration, William found it unsafe to remain in England; he went to St. Christopher in the West India Islands. There he opened a large trade in general merchandise from London to the islands, and to the Colonies on the coast of Maryland and Deleware.
William was referred to as Gentleman, Merchant, and Captain's Agent, "of the Wiccocomecoe River," was first mentioned as being in Somerset Co., Province of Maryland, 6 Feb 1676.He traded in general merchandise from London to the Chesapeake Colonies and West Indies. In 1681, two of his brothers, Derby and Ebenezer joined him near what is now the Maryland/Deleware line, on the Deleware side.Derby settled near present-day Brewington's Mill and Ebenezer near the Line Meeting House. In 1683, at the age of 53, William married Mary Cuthbert, daughter of George and Rose Cuthbert of Witnesham, Suffolk, England, while in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. In 1688, William settled on his plantation, St. Kitts, (purchased before 5 Apr 1684) back in the woods from Wiccocomoco River, near the head of Chaldwell's Branch, near the present town of Delmar, Maryland.
William and Mary were married eight years; he died before the birth of his second son Thomas. In his will of 28 Mar 1691, William devised an equal division of his estate to his son, William, to his wife, Mary, "and the child or children with which my said wife now goeth."On 10 Nov 1691, Mary was appointed executrix.More than half of the worth of his estate was attributed to the worth of nine slaves.
You are descended from his son Thomas, who married Sarah Newbold. His descendants lived on the St. Kitts plantation for over 200 years, and the land has stayed in the family.
Sincerely, Robert and Jewell
