Dear Merlyn:
I know of no documentation for anyone earlier than William Hearne and Mary Cuthbert, but we haven't really looked. We enjoyed a visit to Delmar MD several years ago, where we gathered much of the information we have.
Do you have Newbold information?
Thomas Newbold, of Derbyshire, England (Bk 15, p576) immigrated in 1678, indicated that he intended to settle in Maryland, and was granted 450 acres, which he called Gift, for transporting his wife, Adriana, son Murphy (who died young), daughter Sarah (who died young), and five other headrights. In 1678 he received payment for service against the Nanticoke Indians. Also, in that same year, he purchased the tracts Acquintica, of 500 acres, and Friendship, of 100 acres, all located side-by-side on the north side of the Pocomoke River, a few miles upstream from Pitts Neck.
Adrianna died about 1689; Thomas married Jane Layfield. The girl Sarah from his first marriage must have died before 1691; the next girl child was named Sarah (not an unusual practice then).
On 28 Nov 1689, Thomas signed the address of loyalty to King William and Queen Mary.He bought three small tracts, London Adventure, Black Ridge, and Jericho, totaling 141 acres, from Ambrose and Mary London, on 3 Mar 1694.
Thomas held various public positions during his years in Somerset Co.: he was named Gentleman Justice for tryall of causes in 1679, served as Coroner in 1683, served as Justice 1684-1697, a member of the Council in 1684-1689, commissioned a Lt. of the Somerset Co. Militia in 1688, and served as a vestryman for Coventry Parish.
Thomas, in his will of 9 Feb 1712/13, divided the home plantation equally between his sons Thomas and William. He left to sons John and Francis the 300 acre tract Bashan, six miles from the north-east branch of the Nanticoke River, near the head of Smith's Neck.
Sincerely, Robert and Jewell
