Most Baltimore Hebbs descend from the following line:
Thomas Hebb=Anne Ratliffe
Joseph Hebb = Mary Cole
Joseph Hebb = Alice Evans
John Hebb = Mary Hopewell Lynch (daughter of Captain Stephen Lynch and Sarah Guyther)
John Stephen Hebb (1830-1913) married twice. His first wife was Sarah C. Thomas.(Sarah C. Thomas was the daughter of Captain William B. Thomas who was a founder of the Association of Maryland Pilots in 1852.Captain Thomas was also an "old defender" in the War of 1812).John Stephen Hebb served as President of the Association of Maryland Pilots from 1890 to 1900.He also helped to found the organization along with his father-in-law Capt. Thomas at the old Union Hotel (Bond and Thames Street)in June of 1852.Captain Hebb and his wife Sarah had the following three children: 1. John Thomas Hebb (died)without children 2.Mary Virginia Hebb (1871-1904)who married Captain Edwin Henry Ford (1852-1915) in July of 1895.Captain Ford was founder and senior member of Webster-Ford & Company in Baltimore which was founded in about 1885 and located 2301 Boston Street. This firm owned fleets of ships that sailed the coastal trade from the Northeast to the tropics. The firm was also engaged in the buying selling and dredging of oysters on the bay. The company had canning factories in Baltimore and along the St. Mary's River. The Schooner Augusta was owned by the Company which was still operating for its owners up until about the 1930s according to Jeffrey Footner's Book on the Davis Shipyard.Captain Ford and his wife Mary Virginia had 4 children--two of which survived 1. Douglas Hebb Ford (1898-1976) and 2.Louise catherine Ford (1902-1973).Douglas Hebb Ford was also a Chesapeake Bay Pilot and served as Vice President of the Pilot's Association.Louise Catherine Ford married George Francis Sander, a Baltimore funeral director.
The third and final child of John Stephen Hebb and Sarah C. Thomas was James Hopewell Hebb.James Hopewell Hebb was also a pilot. He married Ella V. Beckwithe. The children from this marriage were James Stephen Hebb. James Stephen Hebb was a bay pilot and married Augusta Finn.
Now, back to Grandpap John Stephen Hebb. His first wife Sarah Thomas died in 1875.Captain Hebb then married Mary Louise Heyer. They had the following children: 1.John S. Hebb, Jr. who married Ida Spranklin. They had one daughter Margaret Linton Hebb who married a Dr. Haigley.
2. Arthur Hebb who married Jeannette Parrish. They had four sons--Charles Parish Hebb, Arthur Hebb, Jr., Donald Bruce Hebb (married Matilda Mylander) and John S. Hebb, III.
3.Berth Hebb married a Dr. Sandrock.Bertha died leaving no children.
4.The youngest daughter of Captain Hebb and his second wife (Mary Louise Heyer)was Jane Hebb. She married her late half sister's (Mary Virginia Hebb Ford) husband Captain Edwin Henry Ford.Together they had two children: Elizabeth Scott Ford who married Robert Lee Geis and Edwin Henry Ford, Jr. who married Marie Schulp.
Confusion among the Baltimore Hebb descendents as to the relationships between the family members has always reigned supreme. It really is easily explained by the fact that Captain John Stephn Hebb (1830-1913) married twice and had children by both marriages. So the descendents from his children from his first marriage and the descendents from his second marriage are all half cousins.Another added twist to this story is the fact that two of Captain Hebb's daughters from his two marriages married Captain Edwin H. Ford.Mary Virgina Hebb married Capt. Ford first in 1895.She died in 1904 and left two children: Douglas and Louise.Mary Virginia's half sister Jane Hebb then married Captain Ford in 1909.Together they had two children: Elizabeth and Edwin, Jr.
