Here lies the mystery. The Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church (Schroon Lake, N.Y) church records show Agnes Riley unmarried and living in Hammondville, NY by virtue of Agnes Riley (the godmother) attending the baptism of Agnes' sister Salama Riley Carpentier's son Jules on February 22, 1891. The 1954 obituary of John Hebert states that John and Agnes were married on September 27, 1891 but does not say where. The question at hand is where were they married? It would seem logical that they would have been married in Hammondville (the bride's home) but no church record of their marriage can be found. According to the current pastor of the Schroon Lake Catholic Church, back in those days as many as three different priests from three different parishes might travel out to the outlying hamlets such as Hammondville and stay a few days to conduct a backlog of baptisms and marriages. There were no full-time priests there, just the circuit riders who went out a few times each year. Some kept records and some did not. Maybe the marriage of John and Agnes was never recorded. In any case, it unnerves me that I can't find the location of where they were married.
