I've been told our original name was Swiss. Several generations spent time in Scotland. Surnames of Morton and Black are common in our names. One of my ancestors was a groundskeeper for an estate in Scotland. He ended up getting killed by a wild boar ... Wish I knew more details. My Grandfather, first name unknown, was a fire brick layer in a Steel Mill in Ohio in the early 1900's. I think they lived in Columbus, but I could be mistaken. My Grandfather died soon after WWII - late 1940's, maybe early 1950's in Ohio. He had two children - my father, Douglas Morton Sutter and my aunt Betty. Betty had breathing problems (TB?) and the family separated during the depression. Louise, my Grandmother (maiden name unknown), and her two children Douglas and Betty moved to Colorado Springs, CO. for several years for Betty's health then moved to Palo Alto, CA. My Grandmother remarried into the Hedgpeth clan and died in the early 50's. My father, Douglas, married into the Davis and Boutte clan from St. Martinville, LA. One last note - My father remembered attending a Brethren Assembled church as a child in Ohio. One last ironic twist … I was born March 23, 1946 in Sacramento, CA at Sutter Memorial Hospital – right across the street from Sutter’s fort! My relationship to Capt. John Sutter is unknown if any.
