A German emigrant’s ‘Geburts-und Wohnort’ can be found from a Hamburg passenger list, if they left from Hamburg. To a German, what does this mean or what would one have typically put for this?Is there a significance of the ‘-und’ versus ‘ und’?To a descendent of such a person, this can provide a good locator for a place to start a search in Germany (formerly Prussia) for records of that person prior to the time of their emigration.
The literal translation of ‘Geburts’ and ‘Wohnort’ is ‘birthplace’ and ‘residence’.But one’s birthplace may not have been the same location as their residence, or in an emigrant’s case, their last place of residence. As the case for many Americans the current place of their residence is far from their place of birth so the two may not be the same.In my case I could be found to have lived in my city of birth for many years before moving.
In your case, you shared you lived in Herford.I am curious, what would you put for your ‘Geburts-und Wohnort’?Would it be Herford or the place or your birth?
