Hugh Brown Heiskell ...more than a few of them.
Hi,
Perhaps this is already widely known by most of you...it is new to me. I did already know that my Aunt Rhoda Farmer married Hugh Brown Heiskell (Haskell)of Rhea Co TN..I did not know until recently that one Hugh Brown Heiskell of the same time frame trekked West by wagon train as part of the phenomenon known as the "forty-niners" - California Gold Rush....I seek to know IF I have the correct "Hugh Heiskell"...her husband was son of Daniel.
Rhoda and husband had a son and a grandson named Hugh Brown Heiskell...there were others (census records) that must have been cousins.
Hugh who was well educated, wrote a detailed diary of this journey west and it was condensed and made into a book - Heiskell, Hugh B. A Forty-Niner from Tennessee: The Diary of Hugh Brown Heiskell. Edited by Edward M. Steel. Knoxville: University of Tennessee Press, 1998.
His diary is said to have been the best primary source for info on the 49-ers.
Anyone who knows "which" Hugh Heiskell please advise me...
I have ordered the book of this diary , which should help me to know more about him.
Thanks
Debbie Wood
