John didn't look rich from the Census or I'd suggest one of those County Histories so popular in the last half of the 1800's. Lots of people put nuggets of genealogical data in with the fluff of how thrifty, sober and industrious they were. He and Caroline both came over from Germany, and probably married here in the US, judging from the kids' ages and birthplaces. I don't know when Ohio started requiring death certificates, but you could find out. If he had one, it might have his parents's names. So might his obituary or cemetery records, if you could find them.
