Greetings Klaus:
I am an American Helfenstein descendant of Major Peter Philip Helfenstein (1724-1778) who migrated from Germany to Winchester, Virginia in about 1754.There are many descendants of this Helfenstein line. Major Peter was Executive Officer of the 8th Virginia Continental Regiment (The German Regiment) during the American Revolution in 1776-78. There has also been some apparently false information about a connection of this line to the well documented line of the Swabian counts which has not been proved. The name has also been spelled in various ways. I have been collaborating on research of this line with American and German researchers for over ten years. The American lineage is incomplete but well developed. The presumed German parents of Peter Philip Helfenstein are undocumented. One researcher suggests that there are about 41 German Helfenstein families that are believed to be related or descend from the ancient Swabian Helfenstein's. There were Helfenstein families at Saltzburg (an early Archbishop of Salzburg), in Switzerland, at Koblenz, and near Cologne. The current theory is that Major Peter was from a Helfenstein family possibly at Andernach, Rheinland.
