The only thing known about Jacques is that he arrived in New France in the summer of 1665 as a soldier inSaurel's company of the Carignan-Salieres Regiment and that he remained to settle when the regiment returned to France in 1667. Marie arrived in New France in the summer of 1667 as a Fille du Roi. The record of her confirmation at St. Joseph de Chambly on 20 May 1669 states that she came from Normandy. Jacques and Marie are known to have been married before 23 Oct 1673 (although no marriage record or contract remains). However, they were probably married soon after Marie's arrival, since Fille du Roi did not remain unmarried for long (shortage of marriageable women in the colony). It is not certain where they resided initially, but by 20 Jul 1684, they are positively identified residing in the Seigneurie of Villemur, which was the basis for the Seigneurie (and later county) of Berthier.
